Just released! Chicago news anchor Sylvia Perez sits down with Gaby Moreno, a Grammy award-winning singer, songwriter, and producer, to discuss her upbringing, career, and experience seeing Rotary’s impact up close. Rotary recently named Moreno as one of its first Rotary Ambassadors in recognition of her commitment to using her voice to make a difference.

Alya Lei was born in Hong Kong and immigrated to the US when she was 3 years old. Alya had the epiphany to be an actor in elementary school, although she never acted on the impulse until after graduating from college! (the irony!!) Alya loves being part of a production that connects to the audience and affects a person's life in a positive way. She's played a therapist on HBO's Barry, an attorney on FOX's Lucifer, a mom on Netflix's 13 Reasons Why. Alya also played leads in indie films that were accepted into award-qualifying film festivals. Alya Lei was a member (and producer) of "FreeFall International" Improv troupe - an international group of actors and creators, established during the pandemic. They performed live, unscripted shows on zoom for audiences all around the world, connecting with joy, tears and laughter, by recognizing everyone's shared humanity. We will have an open format interview of Alya and also a moment of silence for the fires across Los Angeles and our donations made to the 1000 free lodging units provided.
We meet on Zoom on the 2nd and 4th Thursday of the month as Official Meetings for WORKING MEETINGS with members and changemakers. These are open meetings welcoming the world https://us06web.zoom.us/j/7544516386?pwd=d0I4MGdrTW1iWmxKWDhiaTF0YXpVUT09&omn=84911251995 Video ID: 754 451 6386 Code: jaa28B Many people relate with us on our international WhatsApp channel, and when they join our club and become members, they enter into our Members Only Group. Our first working meeting for 2025 lasted three hours long as these meetings heavily work on grants, funding, and scholarships. We host guest speakers on the 2nd and 4th Saturday of each month. At other times, we appear on network television shows for specific topics.
INTENTION BACKED IN THE TRUTH: In early 2022, 42 United States Presidential Service Center (USPSC) Foundation members, board members, and trustees voted to charter and apply to District 7680 as an ACTION-BASED impact club that meets monthly, reports impact projects, and digitally welcomes worldwide members. Under the loving guidance of the Governor, we received our final approved name and club number of 224228.
Our bylaws and constitution were approved by the Secretary General of Rotary International, John Hewko, Esquire. We are a Certified Service Project of the USPSC that became a corporate donor-level supporter. The Board of Directors has provided due notice that President Patricia Freudenberg, under an Article 12 hearing, was asked to resign from this club quietly. On Friday, December 27th, 2024, a quorum of Board members in a fact-gathering meeting called by President-elect Ritu Chopra voted to ask her to resign, and seven seated board members voted yes, and one abstained. Following the bylaws, four board members filed for the Article 12 Board Hearing on December 30, 2024, at 7:00 pm to vote Ms. Freudenberg out of office. The requirement is two. We exceeded the requirement with four board members. At the meeting, LIVE (watch) was recorded with a legal quorum of seven board members present. She was voted out of office, and the minutes were sent to the governor and all board members with the transcript. Our President-elect, Ms. Ritu Chopra (2025-2026), is graduating from pre-PETS training at the Learning Center of Rotary.org and will be attending PETS training in person shortly - in February. Our President-Nominee, Mr. Istiaque Doza (2026-2027) will attend PETS in Bangladesh or online. Recent elections finished on November 4, 2024.
OUR FIRST DISASTER GRANT: We filed and had approved our first-ever disaster grant of $25,000.00 through the Rotary Foundation in the first month of operation (2022). This sent medical kits to Ukraine, and we subsequently engaged in over $300,000.00 in food and medical supplies sent to our partner offices of Fenyx Foundation into 2023. In 2024, we sent games and winter coats, while 2025 has allowed us to participate in a Global Grant for solar panels on top of the Maternity Ward at the hospital in Chernihiv.
SETTING TWO WORLD RECORDS: The first-ever club in Rotary world history to have a DEI Chairperson in the By-Laws as a Board of Directors member, Club #224228. We have no intention of disbanding our DEI programs or shutting them down. We are making world history with 57% minority-inclusive members and 64% women members - setting global records.
We're a fun club with dozens of lady members to join, where mentors and coaches enable growth. We don't have leaders, employees, or members. We have teammates, mentors, and coaches and disallow the word employee to be used for any reason. We have been known to showcase music, one minute of love, holistic healing, and more in our gatherings. We welcome you to avoid our meetings like the plague - as much as you will want to avoid our dues (set extremely low as it is not how we build money to pay our bills). Attending meetings is not part of our strategy, nor are attendance requirements - you can join in with our asynchronous video or audio meetings anytime you like and be a fully engaged member of Rotary. Oftentimes, this leads to even more engagement than ever before. You can watch our gatherings later in the week!
In 2019, we built a 24-hour No Questions Asked Food Bank in front of our offices and expanded the library offerings with our Little Free Library system as an authorized library - Charter #27425. We started working on childhood hunger issues in 1994, leading up to Childhood Hunger Day in 1995. Our board and trustees decided we are committed to stocking the Food Bank more like a blessing box with clothing, books, food, drinks, and more. The community has also pitched in by stopping by and dropping off food - the most magical thing to see ever! In 2020, we held a Free Blanket Week that went well, and we began to accept other items for distribution, including clothes, shoes, belts, and advertising coffee mugs from Carolinas Commercial Realty. Anything to help a person in their home! By 2021, we had distributed more than 3,000 free books - many of which were put into other Little Free Libraries as far away as Chimney Rock, NC. A special thanks went out to Pastor Will Upchurch for donating 1,000+ books. In 2024, numerous donations of sleeping bags, shoes, clothing, food, and more were made by Doris Elaine Smarr and the local community, joining our Rotary Club to keep the bank stocked daily. In 2025, we continued with our Rotary Road Program, handing out two-gallon blessing bags with water, food, clothing, and reading material to the homeless as we reached 4,000 books provided.
